Jeff Weintraub


According to his blog profile, Jeff Weintraub is a social & political theorist, political sociologist, and democratic socialist who currently teaches at the University of Pennsylvania. Weintraub is the co-editor (with Krishan Kumar) of a collection entitled Public and Private in Thought and Prac­tice: Perspectives on a Grand Dichotomy (Univer­sity of Chicago Press, 1997), which opens with his essay on "The Theory and Politics of the Public/Private Distinction." He is writing essays on the social theory of Karl Polanyi, Weber's treatment of political ethics, and the dynamics of competing nationalisms and large-scale "population exchanges" over the course of the 20 th century in the societies of the former Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and Russian empires. One suspended project, to which he may return at some point, is a co-authored book (with Sharon Hays) on the historical sociology of the family.
